Wellness Week and Unity Day

Terry Holman, Student Life Editor

Unity. Wellness. Both are very important in schools all over the world. So what’s better than having a week to celebrate and honor these?! The week of December 13th was Amityville’s first Wellness Week! What exactly is Wellness Week? Every day had a new theme to promote wellness, kindness, and unity within our schools and communities.

Monday: “We are Family Day”
The first thing that students did when they walked in the building was put on name tags. This way, the people around us weren’t just faces. We got to know each other better and connect. Putting a name to a face is the first step to do this. Every period, we all answered a personal question that was announced. During lunch, we were able to play bingo by walking around and getting people’s signatures if they were wearing something specific. We all wore our Warrior Nation sweaters.

Tuesday: “Being Part of the Community Day”
During this day, we had a club fair during our seminar period. This way people were able to join new clubs to become a part of the community. Many clubs gained a lot of people. At the end of the day, just about every club participated in “Unity Day.” We all participated in many different activities. Clubs did things such as musical chairs (Tri-M Honor Society), created ornaments (Art Club), and made posters (GSA). It was a good day for bonding and learning more about each other. We all wore our club and team apparel.

Wednesday: “Future Me Day”
This was a day to plan your future. Students were encouraged to dress in their future professional attire. During seminar, 9th graders attended an assembly with our school social workers, discussing what to do for the future. 10th-12th graders joined a virtual Career Day over Google Meets. The Law Firm of Kenneth Allen Brown PLLC, Junior Achievement, JPMChase, Capital One, Door to Door Health, NYCB Amityville: Banking, Babylon Town Clerk, Amityville Village, Amityville Village PD and FD along with FDNY, and the military, were all on the google meets.

The best part about this day, however, was Pet Therapy during lunch. Amityville partnered with Love on a Leash. We got to pet dogs. What is better than that? Nothing. Their names were Rufus, CousCous, and Tiffany.

Thursday: “Music Therapy Day”
Throughout the day, chorus, orchestra, and band played music in the hallways during passing periods. Everyone loved it and was very supportive to our musicians. Musicians were also able to bond with each other during these events. The clothing theme was tie-dye or music attire.

Friday: “Random Act of Kindness Day”
A table was set up during lunch in the Cafeteria Lobby to give students the opportunity to make kindness cards for students and teachers combined. The goal was to make someone  smile for the day. Blue was the clothing color for the day. During this week, everyone in the school was able to learn more about each other and the opportunities available to them. We hope to continue this every year to grow closer to each other and learn more about our school.
