In a recent interview with the newly appointed Superintendent of the Amityville School District, Dr. Talbert shared her journey from classroom teacher to the head of a school district. Driven by a passion for education since childhood, she believes that Amityville holds the key to a bright future for its students.
Dr. Talbert began her career as a teacher in Louisiana. Following her selection into an internship program sponsored by Bank Street, she underwent a year of intensive training that transformed her into an educational leader. From coordinating services to becoming a principal, her journey took her through diverse educational settings, including a Montessori School and a Title 1 school.
Dr. Talbert explained, “Many people choose education. I felt like education chose me. When I was in 8th grade, I would line up baby dolls along the wall and teach them. My mom said that I was going to be a teacher, and I knew it was a part of who I was.”
Despite her initial aspirations to be a teacher, Dr. Talbert found herself eventually taking on the role of a superintendent. Encouraged by a mentor at Southern University (at the time the largest HBCU in the United States), she pursued a Master’s in Administrative Education, leading her down an unexpected but rewarding path.
Reflecting on her decision to join Amityville, Dr. Talbert expressed excitement about the district’s potential and the brilliant minds within it. She believes that with the right structures and systems in place, Amityville can blossom and thrive.
Asked about her reception within the district, Dr. Talbert shared positive experiences. “I think the staff has been very warm, open, and helpful,” she said. Dr. Talbert took the initiative to connect with staff by meeting with them during their lunch periods, aiming to understand their priorities and work collaboratively towards common goals.
Regarding her plans for educational change in Amityville, Dr. Talbert emphasized the importance of collective efficacy. She believes in bringing staff and students together under a shared vision of academic growth, fostering a positive change in the school culture.
In a lighthearted segment of the interview, Dr. Talbert shared some personal favorites. Her favorite movie is “To Sir, with Love,” a story about a teacher making a difference, and her favorite song is Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” Her favorite literature includes Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey & The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell.
Dr. Talbert concluded the interview by reflecting on her holiday season, when she spent time with family from Louisiana. She expressed her love for travel, the beach, and spending time with loved ones.
As Dr. Talbert takes on the role of superintendent, Amityville eagerly anticipates the positive changes she envisions for the district’s future, embodying the spirit of Mary McLeod Bethune, a historical figure who influenced her life.
“She reminds me of my mother because that’s how my mother was. Mary was an activist who always spoke up and was not afraid to stand for what she believed was right. She was a PTA president. When I was young they closed down the school where I was attending and we were forced to go to another school in a neighborhood that doesn’t look like us. My mom gathered our community and walked the children to school, to make sure we were well received. Mary’s traits and characteristics were embodied in my mother, who showed up as a substitute in our new school to ensure that the children were treated well and transitioned smoothly.”
Like Bethune, Dr. Talbert is committed to standing up for what she believes is right and ensuring the best for the students under her care.
