On Monday, November 4, 2024 members of the Amityville ECHO took time to celebrate Diwali and show Amityville students what it’s like to celebrate the holiday. Students admittedly didn’t know much about this festive event, and at the suggestion of one of our members, Melanie Mangru-Narine, we all decided to showcase some of the traditions connected to the holiday. The club set up a table in front of the cafeteria where students were given the opportunity to create “Diwali-themed” cards using paper, colored pencils, and stencils that respresented the colorful lanterns that are associated with the holiday. Students were able to listen to a playlist of traditional, Diwali-themed music while they created their cards. The table was open during lunch periods and students enjoyed being able to participate and gain acknowledgement about the holiday. Senior Madelyn Martinez said of the event, “Sitting and coloring with friends was very therapeutic.” Amityville Echo senior reporter, Kayla Gordon, said the music was something she hadn’t been exposed to before, but she enjoyed it along with the art project. It turned out to be a great success for everyone!
