The day before Winter Break was filled with festive activities at AMHS. The halls echoed with holiday tunes, carolers from AMHS’s Chamber Choir led by Mr. Garcia, and even visits from singing Administrators in every classroom.
The day ended with a school-wide assembly which hosted an epic Battle of the Classes held in the gymnasium. Students from all grades competed in a series of thrilling games to prove their dominance. The gym was packed with roaring students, all proudly sporting their class colors and ready to cheer on their teams. But by the end of the event, it was the Sophomore class that emerged victorious, claiming the title of champions for this year’s competition!
The competition kicked off with a Potato Sack Race and teams hopped their way down the court, trying to outpace each other without taking a tumble. Students then lined up for a fast-paced hula hoop competition.
Laundry Basket Hungry Hungry Hippos stood out a a clear favorite. This hilarious event saw students, lying on scooters and clutching laundry baskets, scramble to scoop up as many balls as possible. The Seniors put up a strong fight, but the Sophomores pulled off the win.
Next came Basketball Musical Chairs, an intense blend of two classic games. The competition was fierce, with students showing off their shooting skills, grabbing chairs and making clutch shots to stay in the game. When the final buzzer sounded, Senior Alana Henry was the last student standing… er… sitting.
The Balloon Pop event had the gym echoing with laughter and squeals as students raced to pop balloons by sitting on them as quickly as possible.
The final battle culminated in the highly anticipated Tug of War. The entire gym fell silent as the rope tightened and each team dug their heels into the ground. The Seniors seemed to take the win, but ultimately had too many team members on their side.
With their consistent performance across all events, (and a few disqualifications for the Seniors) the Sophomore class was crowned the ultimate champions of the Battle of the Classes. Students celebrated their hard-earned victory with high-fives, chants, and plenty of school spirit.
Sophomore Ada Fanning said “It was the most fun day we’ve had in the high school and I hope we do more events like this.”
Though the competition was fierce, the event brought the entire school together for an afternoon filled with fun, laughter, and friendly rivalry. As students left the gym, already buzzing about next year’s showdown, one thing was clear— the challenge for next year’s title was officially on!
