As graduation approaches, Amityville Memorial High School is celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2025, including this year’s salutatorian, Allessandra Pons, who shared insights into the hard work and dedication behind earning this prestigious honor.
When asked how it feels to be named salutatorian, she replied simply but sincerely, “I think it is kind of cool. I am honored.” Her academic success, she says, came from being attentive and involved in class. “I listened to my teachers and was an active listener and participant in class. Subjects like English and social studies are good to participate in to receive critique and improve on my work, but participating and showing your efforts in every class is important to see what you’re good at and what you’re not, and to then get help and work on what needs improvement.”
Specific study strategies also played a role. The salutatorian highlighted the value of practice and review to solidify learning. “Practicing or reviewing things I struggled with helped cement the information into my head to prepare for tests. Things like Quizlet, or just old classwork would help improve my understanding. Attending extra help was also helpful, because I could get more direct guidance and corrections on any misunderstandings.”
Outside of academics, Allessandra stayed busy in various honor societies and enjoyed contributing to events both inside and outside of school.
One teacher who stood out during her time at Amityville is Ms. Loiacono, who taught both physics and AP Physics. “In my opinion, she was a really good teacher. She put the concepts we were learning to practice, and she was also good (at) having time to review before exams.”
Reflecting on personal growth, Allessandra shared, “Throughout the years, I have grown.”
Her advice to classmates as they move forward is short but sincere: “Good luck.”
When asked if she could change anything about her high school years, it would be getting involved in things even sooner. “I think I should have tried to put more effort in the past and be a more active person in school and the community.”
Looking ahead, Allessandra has ambitious plans. “I would like to go into engineering or somewhere in that field.”
Congratulations to our 2025 salutatorian!
