Kaela Fuller recently sat down with AMHS’s new social worker, Mr. Marrero for a conversation about his life and career.

Background

Mr. Marrero was born in East New York, Brooklyn and was raised in Brentwood.  He graduated from Brentwood High School in 1993. Mr. Marrero went to college for Psychology at NYIT after high school but ended up withdrawing after two years.  Ultimately, he went back to school in 2009 to pursue his degree in Social Work at Stony Brook University and received his BSW in 2010 and his MSW in 2011. He’s worked in the private sector as a project manager, cable technician, and even briefly drove a taxi cab! Most recently, Mr. Marrero worked as the Director of Emergency Housing for an organization that provided shelter to homeless families.

Applying in Amityville

It had always been Mr. Marrero’s dream to work as a social worker in a school.  He applied to 52 schools throughout Suffolk and Nassau and in 2018 landed an interviewed with Amityville.  His mother was very sick at the time but insisted that he go to the interview because she had a good feeling about it. He didn’t think he gave the best interview and unfortunately, wasn’t offered the position at that time. And yet, Mr. Marerro was intrigued by the information given to him in the interview and thought that the district would be a great fit.  In 2019 another position was posted for the 2019-2020 school year and Mr. M. was lucky enough to be selected from a pool of over 100 applicants. His mother passed away before he were offered the position, but he truly feels it was her bringing this opportunity back around for him because Amityville is where he feel he truly belongs.

The Amityville Experience

“I absolutely love it,” Mr. Marrero says. “The faculty, staff, and students have been so ridiculously welcoming and helpful. I had the good fortune to be a part of Awareness Weekend in the fall and that solidified for me why I was selected for the position. I am a Warrior, through and through.”

Favorite things/Hobbies:

In their spare time, Mr. Marrero loves to spend time with his friends and family.  He trains in a boxing gym a few times a week and loves to exercise outdoors, when possible.  He reads constantly and also writes short stories and blogs about everyday life. He also states that he loves food which is why the exercise is super necessary.
