Erykah Badu is an award-winning singer. She is known as the Godmother of soul and a pioneer for the genre, neo soul. Neo soul deals with themes of social consciousness, love, relationships, economics, poverty, racism, and discrimination. The main instruments used are drums, piano, organ, saxophone, trombone, and trumpet.

Before she was a singer, Badu was a dancer and rapper. Her debut album, Baduizm(1997) is considered a classic with hits such as “On & On”, “Appletree”, and “Next Lifetime”. This album earned her two Grammys for best female R&B vocal performance and best R&B album. Live(1997) went double platinum with the hit song “Tyrone”. In 1999, she collaborated with the Roots for the song “You Got Me”, earning her another Grammy. Badu started her own record label in 2005 called Control FreaQ records.
