February is the month that represents Black History, and is something that is widely celebrated. There are articles after articles on line, and in schools explaining the history and the importance of it. But, what if there are ways that this history is snuck into things that we dont even realize?
Adjoa Andoh, an Ghannian-English actress who appears in movies such as Fractured, Brotherhood, and most commonly known for her role as Lady Danbury in Bridgerton. It has been revealed that Adjoa has worked with the costume designers of Bridgerton to incorporate symbolic designs into her costumes, which represent her heritage. Her big tall hats, and walking cane also tell stories of their own. One main design seen was the West African Andinkra Symbols.
From Shondaland, the producers of Bridgerton, Adjoa Andoh was quoted as saying “She has got Gye Nyame in her jewelry designs, which is an Adinkra Symbol that means ‘Except for God, fear nothing.’ She, as in her character Lady Danbury. Even in the simplest ways, representing one’s culture is very significant, it sheds light on details, stories, or meanings one may not have known before. Did you know that the Adinkra symbol means “Except for God, fear nothing”? I didn’t. You can always learn new things from watching shows, even if it is not about the show itself.
