“Dearest gentle reader…”
The town is buzzing once again as Bridgerton returns for its fourth season, bringing new scandals, romance, and the kind of drama that keeps audiences glued to their screens. The series never fails to deliver romance in a fresh way each season. So, what happens this time?
A Return to the Ton: Plot and Storyline
This season takes place after the first three Bridgerton brothers have found their wives, each facing their own challenges in love and life.
The focus now shifts to Benedict Bridgerton, the second eldest brother, who is known for his carefree and adventurous spirit. In fact, he is so adventurous that he simply cannot settle down with one woman. This only reinforces the idea that nearly every Bridgerton man so far—besides Gregory—begins as a notorious rake.
Benedict finds the women of the ton predictable and boring. They are all taught how to walk, talk, and behave in order to increase their chances of finding a husband. However, his mother, Violet Bridgerton, remains determined to see all of her children happily married. She constantly encourages, corrects, and pressures Benedict to find a wife, creating tension between the two throughout the season.
Like previous seasons, this one revolves around a specific romantic trope. Season 1 featured fake dating, while Season 2 centered on enemies-to-lovers. This season focuses on forbidden love, with a touch of love at first sight and a strong Cinderella-inspired storyline.
The couple’s story begins at a masquerade ball. Everyone is dressed elegantly and wearing masks. Some guests are easy to recognize, while others remain mysterious, which adds to the excitement of the evening.
Our female lead, Sophie, attends the ball and seems completely captivated by the experience, as though she has never attended such an event before. Violet finds Benedict arriving late and insists that he ask a lady to dance and behave like a gentleman. Benedict reluctantly agrees, putting little effort into the idea—until he sees Sophie.
To Benedict, she stands out from every other woman in the room.
After introducing himself, he asks her to dance. Sophie hesitates, and Benedict notices immediately. Curious, he asks why. She admits that she does not know how to dance.
This only fascinates Benedict even more.
Not only does she lack the polished manners expected of society women, but she also seems unfamiliar with him. Everyone knows the Bridgertons. So what makes Sophie different?
The two eventually find themselves dancing alone in a gazebo under the moonlight. Benedict jokingly refers to it as a “dance lesson.” The moment feels magical as they waltz together, separated from the rest of the crowd.
Then midnight arrives.
As everyone prepares to remove their masks, Benedict takes off his and waits to finally see the face of the woman who has completely captured his attention.
But Sophie does not remove hers.
Instead, her eyes fill with panic and guilt. She does not want to leave, but she knows she must.
In her rush to escape, she accidentally leaves behind one of her gloves. Benedict is left holding the only clue to the identity of the mysterious woman who already has his heart.
Sophie returns home, quickly changing out of her gown and mask. It is then revealed to viewers that she is not a member of high society at all—she is a maid.
The question becomes: how will their love story unfold?
