On Friday, March 7th, the Amityville Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated Smithtown West 60-57 for the Suffolk County Class AA title, its first since 2020.
Junior Amir Dickerson, who is 3rd in points in Suffolk County, and one of the best juniors on the island, scored 28 to help lead Amityville to a county championship. The road wasn’t easy, as the county championship was their 3rd game in 10 days, knocking off Bellport and their rival team Wyandanch on the way. Before the game, Dickerson showed confidence in being able to take home the win, saying he was 10 out of 10 confident, “We got everything we need”, during an interview with Amityville Broadcasting Network hours before the game on friday. “I just feel like our 5, our 6 is better than anyone else’s.” Dickerson scored seven points in the final 3 minutes to lift Amityville to victory.
Coach Jack Agostino, who is now in his second stint as head coach of the program, adds yet another championship to his astounding resume. However, this game was a little different for him. It was against his brother, Mike Agostino, head coach of Smithtown West. Although Jack came out on top, both showed love and respect for each other. Jack called his brother one of the best coaches on Long Island, saying his time will come. Amityville assistant coach AJ Price, former UConn star who spent time in the NBA, has also been a huge help for Amityville this year. Agostino credits him for Amir Dickerson’s development.
Senior Dajon Clinton added 11 points, while Taki Mason scored 9, and Wes Flythe put up 8 for the Warriors. Allan Dodson-Isabell and Jordan Hines both scored 2 points in efforts to win.
Amityville moves on to the Long Island Class AA Championship game, where they will face Baldwin on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Farmingdale State College.
