It has been official now, starting November, the U.S. government shut down has now become the longest shutdown ever since the 35-day record from 2018-2019. The shutdown began on October 1st, 2025 and its still dragging on with no clear end in sight. The government shutdown happens when congress and the president can’t agree on a specific budget, basically they run out of money to fund federal programs like SNAP that can’t provide a thousands of americans for food stamps. When this happens, thousands of government workers including federal agents are sent home or forced to work without pay.
President’s Trump Role
Donald Trump has said he “wont be extorted” by Democracts who are tying funding bills to healthcare. At a meeting with republican senators, he urged the senate filibuster to allow faster passage of legislation arguing that this would help reopen the government. The administration is also reportedly using the shut down as a chance to reoriganize federal programs. Trump called the shutdown an “unprecedented opportunity” to reduce what he called “Democrat agencies” According to TheGuardian – because Trump is taking a hard line and refusing to negotiate until the government reopens this would make matters more worse as workers suffer to maintain a mortgage.
Real World Impact
For many Americans, this isn’t just about politics. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers are either working without pay or have been furloughed. Major government services like food programs and national parks are facing closures. And for families relying on those paychecks the shutdown has turned into a nightmare. Food assistance programs, like SNAP, are running out of funds, leaving millions uncertain about where their next meal will come from.
