Some childhood dreams take a little longer to come true.
When senior Deanna Murray was an elementary school student, she spent months saving her Class Dojo points with one goal in mind: trading them in for the chance to be principal for a day. Just as she was getting close enough to cash in her points, the quarter ended, her points reset, and the opportunity slipped away.
Years later, during a conversation in her AP Language and Composition class, Deanna shared the story with her teacher, Ms. Wilsher. What seemed like a long-forgotten disappointment quickly sparked an idea.
“When I heard Deanna’s story, I felt like I had to do something to make sure she received the Class Dojo award she had been so excited to earn as a child. The fact that she still remembered that disappointment all these years later broke my heart, but I knew there was still time to turn it into a happy memory before her time in Amityville came to an end. Thank you to Mrs. Rodriguez for making it happen!”
Working together with Assistant Principal Ms. Rodriguez, plans were quietly put into motion to give Deanna the experience she never got as a child. The surprise was finally revealed when Deanna learned that on Tuesday, June 9, she would spend the day shadowing Ms. Rodriguez as Assistant Principal for the Day.
Throughout the day, Deanna received a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to help run a high school. She attended meetings, observed daily operations, interacted with students and staff, and gained insight into the many responsibilities school administrators handle each day.
Ms. Rodriguez was excited to share the experience and help bring Deanna’s childhood goal full circle.
“Having Deanna shadow me as Assistant Principal for a Day was a truly rewarding experience. She approached every task with professionalism, curiosity, and confidence. What made the day especially meaningful was knowing that this opportunity fulfilled a goal she had set for herself years ago as an elementary student.
Throughout the day, she demonstrated strong leadership skills and a genuine commitment to improving our school community. On a personal note, I truly enjoyed matching outfits with her and sharing a few laughs along the way.
Although she shared that her future aspirations lie outside the field of education, she certainly possesses the qualities of an outstanding leader. I have no doubt that she has a bright future ahead of her, and it was an honor to help make this long-time dream a reality.”
What began as a missed opportunity in elementary school became a memorable senior-year experience, proving that sometimes dreams don’t disappear, they simply take a different path.
For Deanna, the day was more than just a chance to step into an administrator’s shoes. It was a reminder that the Amityville school community supports its students and celebrates their aspirations, no matter how long it takes to achieve them.
