Despite ominous clouds and sweltering humidity, the Amityville Memorial High School Class of 2026 celebrated graduation on Saturday, June 27, during a memorable commencement ceremony held on the school’s football field.
The ceremony kicked off at 10 a.m. as Principal Dr. John Cardone led the traditional procession from the track to the stage. He was followed by members of Central Administration, the Board of Education, building administrators, faculty, and finally the graduating seniors, who were welcomed by proud family members and friends filling the bleachers.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Cardone reflected on many of the defining moments that shaped the Class of 2026 throughout their four years at Amityville Memorial High School. From academic achievements to school traditions, he celebrated the resilience the class displayed while encouraging graduates to “be a NY Knick”– meeting life’s inevitable challenges with determination, perseverance, and resilience.
Superintendent Dr. Gina Talbert reminded students of the transformation they experienced during high school.
“You entered as Warriors,” she said, referencing the district’s previous mascot, “but today you leave as The Tide.”
She urged graduates to carry the lessons they learned beyond the classroom by choosing to “serve generously” and “love deeply” as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
Senior Class President Sage Stephens reflected on the strength and courage demonstrated by her classmates throughout their high school journey, acknowledging the obstacles they overcame together while celebrating the friendships and memories that will remain long after graduation.
Salutatorian Elidi Laquidara encouraged her classmates to invest both time and effort into pursuing their future goals, reminding graduates that success is built through dedication and perseverance.
The ceremony also recognized several groups of outstanding students. Assistant Principal Dr. Vineyard honored the graduates who have committed to serving the nation through military enlistment. Assistant Principal Ms. Rodriguez recognized the 43 graduates who earned the prestigious New York State Seal of Biliteracy, while Assistant Principal Ms. Hopkins acknowledged students receiving the AP Capstone Diploma for their academic achievement.
Valedictorian Cristian Chicas kept his remarks brief, speaking about the hope that carried the Class of 2026 through moments of uncertainty and the optimism they should bring into the future.
As students crossed the stage to receive their diplomas, teachers Ms. Wilsher, Ms. Gordon, Ms. Schulken, and Ms. Whitney announced each senior’s name, prompting cheers from family and friends as every graduate enjoyed a well-earned moment in the spotlight. As the final names were called, the threatening weather that had loomed throughout the morning finally began to arrive. Only a few raindrops fell, allowing the approximately 90-minute ceremony to conclude before any significant rainfall began.
Following the recessional, graduates made their way back to the gymnasium to collect their diplomas before emerging to celebrate with family, friends, teachers, and classmates. Under humid skies and with rain narrowly avoided, the Class of 2026 closed one chapter of their lives and stepped confidently into the next.
